Half Price Just Eat Bike Annual Pass

To celebrate World Environment Day on the 5th June, Edinburgh’s Just Eat Cycles are halving the price of their Annual Pass!

The price for unlimited, year-round access to Edinburgh’s new cycle hire scheme normally costing £90, will now be £45 for one week only. An annual pass gives users unlimited access to the scheme for 365 days.

The pass can be purchased via the free Just Eat Cycles app for £45 from 1st June until Sunday 9th June.

The days are getting longer and the bike racks are getting fuller!We're almost at the end of our WTP programme so a massive thank you to everyone that got involved. We greatly enjoyed engaging with you and are so grateful for the level of enthusiasm you brought!

Spring Time is Step Count Challenge Time

For eight weeks, teams of workmates across Scotland will record their daily step count, take part in competitions, and challenge themselves to walk more. Participants track their steps walking to work, going for lunchtime strolls, and using the stairs instead of the lift. Could your team climb our leaderboard to the top?

    Spring has sprung and it's great to see the new wave of bikes joining the healthy commute! Our commuter challenge has now finished, thanks so much to everyone that took part. It was great to have you on board and we saw some fantastic results! The number of sustainable journeys logged over the 6-week period was 27,995!

    Free Cycle Training

    Anyone who wishes to be more confident when cycling or improve their skills and the tuition will be tailored depending on the ability of people who take part. People can either hire a Just Eat Cycles bike for free, or bring their own. Free safety checks are on offer for people who bring their own bike, and also for passers-by.All people over 16 can hire the Just Eat Cycles bikes to take part, and anyone younger than this can take their own bike, but otherwise everyone of all abilities is welcome. Participants will also be given a goody bag to have and keep after the sessions.

    We've made it to Spring! Whether you've been cycling throughout or having a wee break during the dark and cold, the quieter months are a great time to plan and prepare for peak cycling time.     Try your hand at tennis!

    Think you could be the next Andy Murray?

    Whether or not you've tried tennis before, attend one of the following FREE tennis open events.

    Where: Craiglockhart Leisure & Tennis Centre, 177 Colinton Road, EH14 1BZWhen: Wednesday 27th February, 6:30-8:30pm , this event is for adults only.Saturday 2nd March, 2-4pm , this event is for all ages and abilities, with fun-filled activities planned!

    The open events have lots of different activities to try whether it is working up a sweat or working on your technique. We also have some special sessions running from our regular programme that you can try out including:

  • Cardio Tennis  - A high energy tennis and fitness class suitable for adults. 
  • She Rallies  - This one is for the girls! Girls aged 8-14 with experience in tennis can take part in a fun competition in teams. We also have sessions on for female coaches or volunteers to learn some new skills.
  • Tots Tennis  - A series of fun tennis activities for little ones aged 2-4 to try out some tennis and coordination skills.

    Commuter Challenge

    We are two weeks into the Edinburgh Commuter Challenge, hopefully everyone's enjoying it as much as we are! There have been 5700 sustainable travel commuted logged over week 1 which is amazing!

    Switched on @ Work

    The Switched on @ work programme provides a free electric vehicle engagement event for your staff, which will inform them about EV technology, dispel common myths and provide opportunity to undertake short test drives.

    Our Specialist Transport Adviser will work with you to create a tailored presentation which can be used to support the introduction of EV’s to a fleet, increase the use of existing vehicles, or simply inform staff about the benefits of switching to an EV. We also work with local electric vehicle dealerships to allow staff to take an EV for a spin and experience what it’s like to go electric. Sessions last around 1 hour, with a 30 minute talk, followed by time for questions and test drives.

    Lothian Bus2020 Event

    Lothian are launching their Bus2020 strategy Where? - The west side of George Street, between Castle Street and Charlotte SquareWhen? - Sunday 3rd February, 12-4pm

    The event will focus around how one bus load of customers could potentially remove over 100 cars from the road. To help us with this, Lothian have invited 100 car users to bring their vehicles along for a comparison photo with one of our new Alexander Dennis Enviro400XLB vehicles.

    The event will commence at 12pm with some speakers including Richard Hall, Managing Director of Lothian and Nick Page, Managing Director of Volvo Bus UK & Ireland.

    Lothian is committed providing a sustainable transport service by reducing emissions and improving air quality in its operational environment.

    The delivery of cleaner and greener buses into the fleet is central to Lothian’s ‘Bus 2020’ Environmental Strategy, which includes ongoing investments in low and zero emission buses. This ambitious strategy sets out plans to reduce our emissions footprint by 42% by 2020, something Lothian is well on track to deliver.

    George Street, First New Town Design Concept - Consultation

    A consultation is underway on the initial concept design for George Street and the First New Town.

    Plaza areas, people-friendly spaces and a dedicated cycleway are among potential new features included in the draft concept design which has been produced following consultation with a wide range of stakeholders including community, business and specialist interest groups.

    The George Street New Town (GNT) project aims to design a vibrant street environment that is safe for all users – one which significantly enhances its use for pedestrians while prioritising active travel and accessibility. The project is as key element within the wider City Centre Transformation project

    Whatever your views about the proposals, we want to hear from you.

    An online survey is available until 25 January 2019 . Further information about the project and a video of the draft concept design can be found on the GNT project website .

    Edinburgh Commuter Challenge

    Happy New Year!To kick start your new year why not sign up to the Edinburgh Commuter Challenge?The challenge is free to enter and is open to everyone working or living in Edinburgh!

    The challenge runs from Monday the 21st of January for 6-weeks, ending on Thursday the 28th of February.

    Whether you walk, cycle, drive or take public transport to work, you can participate!

    Each week you are emailed a link to log your commute, and you have the chance to win prizes including annual JustEat Bike passes, an Escape Room Session, climbing course at Ratho Climbing Arena and many more!

    Commuter Challenge

    The Edinburgh Commuter Challenge is back for another year! Fulfil your New Years resolutions this year by taking part in the Edinburgh Commuter Challenge.

    The aim of the challenge is to get people thinking about how they travel and to encourage people to commute by walking, cycling and public transport. The challenge runs for six weeks from Monday 21st January to Thursday 28th February 2019.

    Santa Dash

    Walk, run or stroll 2.5km around West Princes Gardens to raise money for children's charity, When You Wish Upon A StarWhere: West Princes Street GardensWhen: Sunday, 9th December, 10:30-2:00, the event starts at 1pm after a special Christmas warm up

    Take part in a 2.5km dash around West Princes Street Gardens this Sunday, suitable for all ages! All entries receive a free santa suit, beard and hat to wear for the dash. There will be special prizes for the best dressed pushchairs and best dressed dogs too. The entry fees are as follows:

    Free Sustainable Transport Review from Energy Saving Trust

    Energy Saving Trust can provide free independent sustainable transport reviews, that will show how your organisation can save money and reduce transport emissions.

    This service will use company data to review your current situation and recommend potential savings. It has supported over 50 clients since April and recommended average annual savings of over £16,000 and 31 tonnes of CO2 per organisation in 2017-18.

    Alzheimer's Research UK have just launched their winter cycling campaign, Cycling Down Dementia, to encourage people to ride 300 or 1000 miles between the 1st of November and the 31st of January to raise money for life-changing dementia research!

    The challenge can be completed any way you like. Whether it's swapping the bus for your bike, heading out on a ride at the weekends, or in the gym.

    You can log your journeys with Strava or MapMyFitness and Cycling Down Dementia will tell you how far you have left to go.

    Raise £200 and you'll receive a Buff, hit £400 and you'll receive a jersey!

    Improve Your Cycling Confidence

    Croftcarboncollege and ELREC are offering free cycling classes for all age groups!When: Saturday the 24th of NovemberBeginners: 2-3:30pmIntermediate: 3:30-4:30pmWhere: Leith Community Croft, 4 John's Place, Edinburgh, EH6 7EL

    The beginners classes will cover basic bike skills including:

  • Balancing;
  • Mounting and dismounting;
  • Breaking and stopping;
  • Steering; and
  • Changing gears.
  • The intermediate class will include:

  • Advanced games and exercises;
  • Coordination;
  • road safety;
  • Signalling, positioning and turning; and
  • Roundabouts.
  • The classes are for all age and confidence levels, and aim to increase your ability to where you can cycle safely on the road or paths and feel confident to use your bike more!

    Be Bright Be Seen

    Be Bright Be Seen roadshows encourage everyone to stay safe and look out for each other now that the darker months are upon us.

    The City of Edinburgh Council is running Be Bright Be Seen roadshows this week with lots of tips on staying safe in the dark.

    These roadshows are free and open to everyone!

  • Tuesday 30th October 4-6pm - King's Buildings Square;
  • Wednesday 31st October 7-9am - Western General Hospital, Outpatients' Department, Porterfield Road; and
  • Thursday 1st November 2:30-4:30pm - Sighthill Campus of Edinburgh Napier University and Edinburgh College at Sighthill Court.

    myPTPBe Bright Be Seen Roadshows

    Thank you to everyone who has got back to us and organised a Be Bright Be Seen Roadshow. We will be running the roadshows across November, targeting the morning (7am-9am) or the evening (4pm-6pm), please get in touch as soon as you can to get one for your organisation arranged.

    CEC WTP Evaluation - Interviews

    We are looking to carry out 1-2-1 interviews with staff across the organisations we are working with this year.

    We are looking to engage with staff from each mode of travel (walking, cycling, public transport, car sharer & lone driver) across key sectors who are participating in the programme. This will involve a short interview with them this October/ November with a follow up in Spring 2019.

    As a thank you, we are offering a £100 Amazon or John Lewis voucher to each participant!

    Those who sign-up will also be entered into the prize draw for 3 x £20 Amazon vouchers.

    Smarter Choices, Smart Places Feedback Survey

    To assist the Council with their application for continued Smarter Choices, Smarter Places funding, which funds our work with yourselves, amongst other sustainable transport awareness-raising projects, we are asking organisations to complete a short feedback form.

    The Council are looking for feedback on the initiatives which have been ran as part of the programme and the types of initiatives that you feel would be beneficial and important in our work to encourage more active travel and public transport for short journeys, in place of private car.

    The feedback will be passed onto elected members to help with planning the Councils bid for SCSP funding in 2019-20.

    Free Walking and Cycling Festival at Portobello Community Garden

    This free event aims to raise awareness of walking and cycling opportunities available in the Portoblello and Leith area. There will be activities suitable for all ages, including: bike checks, a bike obstacle course, buggy walks, Nordic walking and a smoothie bike!

    Everyone is invited to join Love to Ride's Cycle September to help get more people on bikes. It doesn't matter whether you haven't been on a bike in years, you can ride for fun or as a mode of transport any time, anywhere in September to take part!

    There will be a friendly competition between workplaces (individuals can take part too!) to see which can get the most staff to try riding a bike, plus there will be prizes for riding and encouraging others - including Love to Ride's annual global prize for a trip to New Zealand or the Grand Canyon!
